Day 5: Body Paragraphs (PIE)


Objectives: Students will be able to:
  • Identify four common body paragraph patterns in academic writing and their different  purposes
  • Identify weak paragraphs and offer suggestions
  • Take the PIE pattern into consideration in revising our body paragraphs.

Part I [15 min] PIE 9:30-9:45
Given the type and length of essay that we are writing in this first unit, we will focus on PIE as the pattern for practice in this essay. Let's review the main points by looking to this PIE STRUCTURE PPTThis presentation reiterates some basic structures that are commonly found when developing points within essays. 

Part II [20 min] PIE Paragraph Worksheet  9:45-10:05

Part III: [15 min] PIE in a Standard Argument Essay  10:05-10:20
Please click on this SAMPLES ARGUMENT PAPER and read it. We will analyze the structure of body paragraphs and how they relate/support the thesis statement.

Part IV: Student Paragraph Analysis (10 min) 10:20-30
I will have you work in small groups to analyze your own writing. Then, I will show you some revisions to the paragraphed based on the PIE modal. Click on Student Paragraph Analysis  to access the document.


Part V: Work on Homework (20 min) 10:30-10:50
To end today's class, I would like everyone to bring up their homework that is due this evening. Before we talked about introductions and thesis, today our focus was body paragraphs. I would like to give you time to revise your topic sentences and supporting points into the outline format provided. Remember, that this assignment is to be an OUTLINE as that should be your first step in composing a paper. Please click on the homework assignment for Unit 1 and follow along as I explain the directions.I will be giving you this time to get started on your project, please use your time effectively. I will be circulating for assistance.

Please open  Writer's Help and log in. Go to the assigned links and find Topic Sentences. Work to complete this in pairs. Be prepared to share your answers. We will also discuss other paragraph structures including those that do not have a topic sentence.
