 Day 11: Avoiding Plagiarism II & APA Citations

Lesson Objectives:
  • Understand concept of what is common knowledge and when citations are needed.
    Learn to identify three key reasons to use quotations
  • Understand basics to APA Citation and learn where to go for future citation questions.

[15-20 min] Part I: Peer Review of Summary Writing  9:30-9:45
Analyze student summary writing in pairs. click SUMMARY WRITING PEER REVIEW to access criteria needed for evaluation. Look to see if they have fulfilled the criteria strong writing. Show sample summary, discuss as a class. Introduce new summary assignment (article #2) with vocabulary assistance.

[15 min] Citation Styles: What's my style!? :)    9:45-10:00
CITATION PPT Click on this CITATION STYLE HANDOUT to access the materials for this part of class. We do not go into detail on APA citations, but I will cover the basics if we have time. Access to citation reference materials is found within this document.

[15 min] Citation Machines  10:00-10:15
on the bottom of the CITATION STYLE HANDOUT you will see a reference list of different type of citation software. For this part of class, I will show you how Microsoft Word can create a reference page for you and store your sources for future use (Other software does this as well).

[20-30 min] Part IV: Citation Activity/Lecture  10:15-10:40
Know where to find the answers!
Citation Styles are not really a writing "skill" that I teach you. Memorizing a citation style is unnecessary.You should simply look up details that you need when you cite.

What you should do is learn WHAT the styles you need and WHERE to look for the rules when you apply them to your papers. To end today's class, we will look at one citation style, APA, and then complete a worksheet on citations.
