Day 13: Comparative Language and Synthesis


Objectives: Students will be able to:

·      Identify the distinction between summarizing sources and synthesizing sources
·      Learn more synthesis language and practice their use
·      Work in groups to identify synthesis points for their paragraphs. 


[20 min] Part I: Synthesis Language Warm up 9:30-9:50

1) Please click here and work with a partner to come up with synthesis/comparative language structures and vocabulary. Don't cheat and look ahead just yet.*Option- have them compare an actual object: Online Courses vs. Face2Face Courses 

2) Now, consider the most common reporting verbs you know for academic writing. Make a list with the verbs that take THAT and those that do not take THAT after the verb. When you are finished, we will review a REPORTING VERBS handout. 

Note that you will need to correctly use both Comparative Language and Reporting verbs in order to create effective synthesis in your essay.

[10 min] Part II: Review Synthesis 9:50-10:00

[35 min] Part III: Writer's Workshop 10:00-10:35
I will now have you get into the following groups and finishing filling out a Synthesis Chart according to the articles you have read. Help each other fill out the chart and begin drafting an outline for your paper. You will also begin to draft topic sentences for each paragraph.


[10-15 min] Part IV: Creating Thesis for Informative Papers 10:35-10:50
We will work together to create working thesis statements for our informative papers.
