Day 8: Conclusions and Academic Language

Lesson objectives:
  • Review the major elements learned thus far.
  • Discuss strategies for conclusions
  • Provide in-class time to work on conclusions. 

Part I: Complete Cohesive Devices Worksheet (10-15 min) 9:30-9:45
Complete transition word activity and take any additional questions.
Also we will briefly discuss some teacher notes that are based on common transition errors. Click on NOTES ON TRANSITION ERRORS 

Part II: Informal/Formal Academic Language (30 min) 9:45-10:15

Part IV: Major Components to a Conclusion  (20 min)10:15-10:35
Small Group Questions:
  1. What should a conclusion do?
  2. Can you list some strategies you can use to achieve that?
  3. What should a conclusion not do?

Part III: Mini Peer Review  (15 min) 10:35-1050
Now that you all have feedback on your outlines, you are ready to turn that into a your final paper. Please click on the following handout and use it as a guide in finishing your paper for this unit: SELF and PAIR PEER REVIEW

Now, pull up your diagnostic essays. I will give you about 5-10 minutes to orally share your outlines and provide feedback in pairs or groups of three. You can use the link above or simply consider the following questions
  • Does the thesis answer the prompt question? 
  • Is the thesis debatable and clear?
  • Do the topic sentence support the thesis?
  • Do they have sufficient I in the PIE to support their topic sentence?

Homework: Work on Writer's Help Assignments. I will be checking.
