Day 10: Summary Writing

Lesson Objective:
  •  Identify common introductory phrases for summary writing, practicing correcting weak phrases.
    ·         Understand purpose and variation in summary reminder phrases, practicing correcting weak phrases
  •  Identify strengths and weakness in sample summary texts.

[5 min] Small Group Discussion 
  1. What are three ways that we can integrate sources into our papers?
  2. What do the terms “in-text citation” and “references” and “bibliography” mean?
  3. When, if ever, do you need to summarize for work within your own field?

[20 min] PART I Starting a Summary 
Open up the SUMMARY WRITING PPT for today and follow along as we begin with a discussion on getting started to summary writing.  Slides 1-10 will relate to this topic and will cover Pre-writing strategies and first sentence examples. You will also need to access: INTRODUCTION STATEMENT WORKSHEET


[25 min] Body and Concluding a Summary
Slides 11-15 will discuss structures and features that are often found within the body and conclusion of a summary. Stop on Slide 15 and refer to the handout. You should complete TASK 8 in pairs/groups (Task 8 is in the printed handout, answers are in the Google doc, DON'T LOOK YET!). We will then discuss possible answers as a class.TASK EIGHT can be found in the Swales and Feak page 168-172), Complete in groups and then we will discuss as a class.

[20 min] Read to Discover 
Stop on slide 16. In this last part of the class, you will be asked to read a short essay and identify the strengths and weaknesses of four summaries. Read individually and then work together to decipher the answers. Be prepared to share. Slides 17-19 reveal the answers. DO NOT GO AHEAD!

[10 min] Summary Assignment 
Stop on slide 20 while I explain the directions to your first upcoming assignment and how it will fit into the bigger picture of what we plan to do with Unit 2. Please open assignment directions and pay attention as I go over the main learning objectives for this Unit.
