  • Work to build an outline for our Summary Critique Paper

Part I: Overall Guide to Summary Critique  10 min
To begin today's class, we will go over the general direction to the assignment located under Unit 3: Summary Critique to ensure all students understand criteria and deadlines. Then, we will review the handout page titled, Self-Review and follow along as we go over the elements that are needed in your Summary Critique. Please use this as a guide in constructing your final paper as these are the criteria you will be graded on. Click HERE to access the Self-Review Handout. You are REQUIRED to fill out and bring this document to our scheduled individual conference next week. We will be working with this documents in the end of today's class, once you have seen the process you have made on your outline/draft.

[15 min] Part II: Identifying Points for Critique
For this last part of today's class, I would like you to work together in groups to identify elements of the research paper that you feel would be good elements to critique. Remember, critique means assessing both “good and bad” parts to a paper. Let’s have a quick review on possible elements to critique in research papers:

1) Is their research significant? Does it contribute to the field?
2) How well-executed were their research methods or approach to the subject?
3) Were their results or argument founded in clear evidence?
4) How effective was the style and organization of their paper?

I will be placing you into three groups: Group A, Group B, and Group C. We will be sharing our thoughts with the class by writing on this CRITIQUE POINTS GOOGLE DOCBe prepared to share your critique point ideas with the class.

Part III: Refining  Outlines/Drafts 25-30 min
For this part of today's class, I would like everyone to begin/continue drafting their Summary Critique Papers. If do not already have these, remember that you will need:
  • A) A complete introduction that ends on a transitional thesis statement
  • B) Three critique points in the form of topic sentences
  • C) Underneath each of those topic sentences, use phrases to signal the illustrations you will use to support those critique points.
  • D) A comprehensive conclusion that (summarizes, calls for more research, makes recommendations, ends a broader note)

I will be coming around to provide assistance in outlining your paper. Make sure that you save it to your desktop and save time to upload it to your dropbox before the end of class.

Part IV: Self and Pair Peer Review  (15 min)
Now that we have established more direction with our outlines, I would like you to use the Summary Critique Self- Peer Review to provide informal advice/review in pairs or groups of three. Click on the SELF-REVIEW and follow the steps. I will circulate.
