Part III: Outline Samples (20 min)  2:35-2:50
In the last class we started to discuss how prompts effect the type of writing structures. For example, we already know that essays are not structured inthe same way as business memos. To review the concept of how writing purposes effect essay structure, let's go back to the last lesson and consider the three different type of writing prompts. What type of outline would work for each? Work together in small groups to come up with a rough outline of concepts for each writing prompt. I will then present sample outlines.

Now that we understand the role of the thesis as well as different types of outlines., it is time to create an outline that supports a thesis we will use for our first essay. Lets first look at this BASIC EXAMPLE OUTLINE and discuss it's structure as a class.

Potential Discussion Questions
  1. Do you have any advice that you would give to this student?
  2. Can you provide alternative ways to structure this essay?

Part IV: From Thesis to Outline Worksheet/Workshop (25-30 min) 2:50-3:20
Now that we have discussed both Thesis and Outlining, we are ready to thinking about how these can be applied to our own essay. Please refer the the THESIS TO OUTLINE WORKSHEET and follow along to the instructions. [Time Permitting, we can get a student volunteer and work to transform their essay into draft of an outline.]
