Day 10

: Avoiding Plagiarism I/ Paraphrasing

Lesson Objectives:
·         Understand common examples of plagiarism and consequences
·         Identify plagiarized works as a result of poor paraphrasing
·         Recognize and practice paraphrasing strategies



[5-10 min] Part I: Introduction to Plagiarism 9:30-9:40
A) Video: We will start today's class with a short 2 min video related to plagiarism. We will watch:
Plagiarism Outside Academia: Video on Vice President Joe Biden 

  • What actions do you think constitute as plagiarism?
  • What reasons should plagiarism be avoided for you or your field?
  • Why are proper citations important?

Be prepared to share your responses. We will then go over some of the basic acts that constitute as plagiarism and look at the following plagiarism handout


[30 min] Part II: Difference in Quoting/Paraphrasing/ and Summarizing 9:40-10:10
Please refer to the handout titled, QUOTING/PARAPHRASING/SUMMARIZING as we review some key differences between these methods and look at which needs to be cited. 

PPT ON When (not) to Quote.  This PPT covers the basics to when you should quotes vs. when you should paraphrase/summarize.We will only cover slides 4-6. You should review the remainder of this PPT on your own at home. There is also a handout HANDOUT ON WHEN TO QUOTE for your reference.

Time permitting, we will also have a worksheet that deals with when we need to cite and when we do not. click on Handout On Common Knowledge and Citation to access these materials (This exercise is from Writer's Help Online).


[20 min]  Part III: Identifying Plagiarism/Paraphrasing 10:10-10:30
Thus far, we have discussed summary writing as a means to integrate a source into our papers. For this part of today’s class we will focus on paraphrasing. Please refer to the handout titled, PARAPHRASING and pay attention as we go through some major elements. Notice that failure to paraphrase correctly commonly results in plagiarism.


[20 min] Part IV: Writer's Help Online 10:30-10:15
To further the discussion of avoiding plagiarism, we will look to some practice activities in Writer's Help Online. Please go there now and follow along on where we should go as a class. Below is a comprehensive list of links related to integrating sources into papers

[5 min] Part V: Clarify Homework for the weekend
 Read and Summarize the first article. This is approximately 3/4- 1/2 pages and should be 1-2 paragraphs.
