Day 25:Presentation Organization/Structure

Objectives: Students will be able to:

  • Outline and organize a presentation in a similar way that they would a paper
  • Learn about the content and movement through an introduction, body, and conclusion of a presentation and see the parallels between academic presentations and academic writing
  • Develop an effective introduction, thesis statement, and conclusion
Preparation:

[5-10 minutes] Unit Overview
To begin today’s class. I will introduce the objectives of this presentation unit and the major assignment. In this Unit we will address four skills:

1) Presentation Organization
2) Presentation Visual Aid Content
3) Presentation  Visual Design
4) Presentation Spoken Language

Please click on FINAL ORAL PRESENTATION DIRECTIONS to access the directions to your final presentation.

 [10 minutes] Presentation Warm-Up
To get us oriented to the unit, I will ask everyone to complete the PRESENTATION WARMUP and share their answers within small groups.

 [5-10 minutes] Class Discussion
Review: What do we know about culture and writing? What are typical features of American academic writing?
  •  How might this carry over to presentations? What features might you expect in an American academic presentation?
  • How is the audience of a paper different than an audience of a presentation? What might you do to adapt to a presentation audience?

[20 minutes] Outlining a Presentation  10:00-10:20
American academic presentations follow very similar patterns as American academic writing. They should have an introduction with a thesis statement, a body section with topic and concluding statements for each point, and a conclusion with the implications of the presentation. In order to be sure to include all of these features, the outlining step is particularly important.

To see how similar the structure of a paper is compared to the structure of a presentation, we will convert our last assignment into a presentation format. To do this, take out the outline or paper of your summary critique and fill in this PRESENTATION OUTLINE HANDOUT. After you have completed, compare outlines with a partner. I will present the answers after everyone has shared their outlines.

[35 minutes] Presentation Workshop 10:20-10:50
For the last part of today’s class, I will lead you in a workshop (you can click on PRESENTATION WORKSHOP PART I PPT to access this materials later). As I go through the steps to create an outline, you will create their own practice PPT according to the step described in the PPT. I will be walking around to assist as well as check comprehension of the task.

[10 min- *During or after Workshop] Signing Up For Presentations
As students are constructing their PPT, I will call students up to the front to sign up for conferences. Here is the link to the SCHEDULE FOR PRESENTATIONS

Homework:  (Assignment posted in the PPT also)
  1. Choose a topic for your final presentation.
  2. Create a PPT just like we did in class today with an outline and basic slides for the introduction, body, and conclusion.
